2020 Chevrolet Traverse VS. 2020 Ford Explorer

2020 Chevrolet Traverse VS. 2020 Ford Explorer

For the past few years, competition has been fierce between SUVs, which are popular for their ruggedness, space and handling. The American manufacturers Ford and Chevrolet, renowned for the solidity of their SUVs, are two strong rivals. Their mid-size SUVs of the 2020 model year, the Ford Explorer and Chevrolet Traverse respectively, will be compared here to help you make the right choice.

Sept-Iles Chevrolet Buick GMC of L’Ami Junior group on the Côte-Nord presents the Chevrolet Traverse by comparing its features with those of the Explorer.

Traverse or Explorer: Which to Choose?

Both SUVs, whose names evoke escape and travel, offer powerful engines to get you to your destination. But when you compare the engines offered for the base versions, Chevrolet wins. Chevy offers a 310-hp 3.6-litre V6 engine, while Ford offers a 300-hp 2.3-litre turbocharged engine. A 9-speed automatic transmission for the former and a 10-speed automatic for the latter is a common feature of both SUVs.

With all-wheel drive available on both sides, they’re both good choices in terms of stability and handling. However, Chevrolet’s V6 engine is where it counts: it offers the strength needed to climb mountains. So if you’re an adventurer at heart, and steep, high trails are part of your itinerary, the Traverse is a solid choice.

As for fuel economy, consumption is also rather similar, with a slight advantage to the Traverse. Compared to the Explorer’s EcoBoost engine, which consumes 9.8 L/100 km on the highway, the 8.7 L/100 km Traverse offers a more fuel-efficient option.

Next, the main point emphasized by those who choose the Traverse is the space it offers its passengers. In fact, the mid-size SUV is roomy enough to accommodate a family without compromising style. Rather than holding up to seven seats, it seats eight instead, and those seats offer more space, especially for rear-seat passengers. If adult passengers find it difficult to find comfort in the rear seat of the 2020 Explorer, the Traverse offers conversely greater legroom.

Thus, the Traverse surpasses the Explorer as a family SUV, not only in terms of space, but also with respect to certain technologies and features. For example, it offers an optional rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

The power liftgate is another important feature for all generations: in both cases, the offer will vary depending on the version. Chevrolet has thought of all the conveniences, like the all-weather floor lining with floor mats found in the High Country.

When it comes to seating comfort, the two models are similar: both include leather seats on their higher-end models. Heated front seats and even rear seats are also available. A heated steering wheel, optional on LT and standard on High Country, is standard on more versions of the Explorer.

On the safety front, Chevrolet has nothing to envy its rival, with features such as blind-spot detection and automatic emergency braking. Other notable features include the advanced adaptive cruise control on the deluxe model or available rear park assist.

Modern technology is also on board; while the Explorer has FordPass Connect, the Traverse is matched by the myChevrolet App. Both also offer SiriusXM satellite radio on several trim levels and include voice command. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility makes everything from navigation to hands-free calling possible.

All in all, although we’re dealing with two American SUVs with similar features, the Traverse stands out in certain key aspects. The spacious cabin and family-friendly technologies are part of it, just as much as the powerful V6 engine and the traction to take on any road.
