GMC: The 2020 Terrain vs. Ford Escape

When it comes to crossover vehicles, space is generally expected for both passengers and luggage. At Sept-Iles Chevrolet Buick GMC, we understand your needs. In fact, we now offer you the best compact SUV, bolder and sharper than ever! The GMC Terrain takes on an all-new look in 2020, and since its transformation in 2018, it continues to grow in popularity.

As if this SUV hadn’t proven itself in the past, this time the leading American automaker wanted to make its SUV even more enjoyable, comfortable, powerful and stylish. In this regard, it stands out from the 2020 Ford Escape, which boasts a much more sober look. It’s not only the idea of a more spectacular look with black-finish wheels and dark trim, but it’s above all elements well coordinated to a highly balanced whole that General Motors unveiled with its 2020 Terrain, and the many advantages of driving it.

Terrain or Escape?

To begin with, the Terrain model is available in SLE or SLT versions with 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels. What’s more, its Black Edition adds a dark grille trim and a high-gloss black finish on the front grille surround, giving it a very elegant look. Exterior mirror housings, roof rails and other decorative elements, as well as available black GMC badges, also add refinement to the vehicle. In contrast, Ford does not offer a Black Edition version of the Escape.

When it comes to power, the American automaker offers you a choice. First of all, the vehicle is lighter than the previous 160 kg models, which not only improves handling but also gives it power. What’s more, the 2020 Terrain is available with all-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is more complex than front-wheel drive and can be defined by the fact that the engine’s power is sent to all four wheels of the vehicle, not just two; that’s a clear advantage for driving in Quebec.

Returning to GM’s SUV, it’s available with either a 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a capacity of 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft or a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that can produce up to 252 horsepower and 260 lb-ft or even a 1.6-litre turbo diesel engine. While the GMC Terrain is equipped with a 9-speed automatic transmission, the 2020 Escape is equipped with an 8-speed transmission. Again, the GMC Terrain scores significantly better with its 2.0-litre turbo engine.

The high-end edition of the 2020 Terrain also includes high-intensity discharge headlights with distinctive C-shaped lighting, a Traction Select system, a leather steering wheel, remote keyless entry and remote starter, dual-zone automatic climate control, a fold-flat front passenger seat, heated seats in addition to numerous features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, 4 USB ports, teen function, and much more. The Terrain SLE’s interior is spacious and can easily accommodate five, six or seven passengers. That’s a plus compared to the Ford Escape.

It also offers optional intelligent safety features, such as the exit warning with a sophisticated side obstacle detection system, the StabiliTrack electronic stability control system with traction control, adaptive cruise control with a camera, a tire monitoring system, and so on.

Finally, the 2020 GMC Terrain is more robust than the 2020 Ford Escape thanks to its new platform and suspension design that now better absorbs road imperfections. In short, the Terrain is more agile on all the roads of Quebec, Canada and the United States than its opponent, the Ford Escape, according to the experts in “Le Guide de l’auto 2020”. The same goes for parking maneuvers. The clear winner: the 2020 GMC Terrain for its ingenuity and performance.
